Protecting The Workers Who Protect America's Workers

President Alex Bastani opened the meeting upon securing quorum and suggested a procedure of nominating candidates followed by allowing each nominee 45 seconds to address the meeting re their qualifications, etc.  The procedure was accepted unanimously.  He also announced that the previous day the Executive Board had appointed Scott Paris as BLS Agency Vice President and Dino Drudi as Secretary, switching the two positions they had previously held.

1)     Sarah Shortall nominated Ronald Gottlieb of  SOL who accepted later in the meeting;

2)     John D Vena II nominated Nicole Washington of OSEC who accepted;

3)     Ed Stern nominated David Hershfield of MSHA who accepted;

4)     Tina Bynum nominated Al Woodson of OSHA who accepted;

5)     Nicole Dyson nominated Lisa Lee of EBSA who accepted;

6)     Michelle Porter nominated John D Vena II who accepted;

7)     Al Woodson nominated Danielle Gibbs but she declined;

8)     Daniel Hayes nominated Tina Bynum of OWCP who accepted;

9)     Laima Ciguzis nominated Bruce Andersen of OFCCP who accepted;

10) Eleanor Lauderdale nominated Richard Jackson of BLS who accepted;

11) Eleanor Lauderdale nominated Margaret Kavanagh of BLS who accepted.

Each nominee spoke for up to 45 seconds.  President Bastani sought additional nominations, but there were none, so nominations were closed.  Because the number of candidates exactly equaled the number of vacancies, the negotiating team was deemed elected.

Dino Drudi moved to also elect the chief negotiator, but President Bastani ruled it out of order as premature.  Dino challenged the ruling which the membership upheld 12-24.  President Bastani announced that the negotiating team would select its chief negotiator and alternate chief negotiator.

Adjourned.

What you need to know about becoming a Bargaining Unit Team Member

4/7

PDF This is the formal announcement of the Election of the Local 12 Bargaining Team to negotiate a new contract. This election by the Local 12 membership present and voting will take place on Wednesday May 19, 2010 in the Frances Perkins Building Auditorium starting at 12 Noon. We have ten (10) positions to be elected for dues paying members to represent the Local 12 members at contract negotiations.

Responsibilities of a Team Member

The members of this bargaining team will be responsible for negotiating over working conditions and benefits such as flextime, flexiplace, training, expanded maternity/paternity leave, child care subsidies, and a host of workplace issues.

The elected individuals will be spending approximately a month on official time in preparing the Union’s proposal during the summer. The actual bargaining will take place over eighty (80) workdays including ten (10) Friday caucus days. Team members will be on official time during the bargaining process but will have to return the other ten (10) workdays during the process. The “post” formal bargaining process may take another month as we proceed through mediation and possibly the Federal Service Impasse Panel (FSIP).

We need hardworking and intelligent people who are serious improving the working conditions at the Department of Labor and establishing once again that we are the model agency for not only the federal sector but also the private sector work environment.

We look forward to seeing all our members on May 19th in the

Frances Perkins Building Auditorium at 12 Noon.
