Text Box: Assistant Treasurer:
David Hershfield
Text Box: For more than eight years, David Hershfield has served Local 12 as either Assistant Treasurer or Treasurer. His goal throughout more than twenty years as a union rep has been to promote a hard-hitting, effective, democratic union that protects the rights of the brothers and sisters who work at the Department of Labor.
David started at OSHA as an economist in 1987 and promptly became a union steward. In 2003, he won a promotion to a higher grade and became an economist at MSHA. This was the result of an 8-year struggle through the grievance, arbitration, and unfair labor practice processes, with excellent representation by Local 12. David received from the Department nearly five years’ back pay differential, plus interest.
David holds a bachelor’s degree from the City College of New York and master’s and Ph.D. degrees from Princeton University, all in economics. Before coming to the Department, David was a college teacher and a researcher, specializing in the economics of labor relations.
David and his wife, Merle, live in Friendship Heights, MD. Between them, they have three sons, two daughters, and eight grandchildren.

Text Box: President:
	Alex Bastani
Text Box: Alex Bastani is currently the President of AFGE Local 12. A twenty-two year Department of Labor employee, Alex has served as either a steward or officer with Local 12 for over eighteen years. Mr. Bastani led the Local’s fight against A-76 (privatization of federal jobs) during the Bush administration and through a four year pronged approach of litigation; lobbying, mobilization and media outreach was able to cancel a contract of over 70 million dollars and save the jobs of at least one hundred Local 12 bargaining unit employees.

Alex has handled dozens of arbitrations and hundreds of grievances and won cases concerning removals, suspensions, back pay, equal pay for equal work, and the right of federal employees to exercise their religious beliefs at the workplace. Alex previously served as Executive Vice President of Local 12 where he managed the Local’s extensive arbitration case load and created and developed the Local’s legal intern program that has now trained a dozen law students.

The Local 12 Labor Heritage Month Celebration was created under Alex’s term as Local President which has included illustrious guest speakers such as U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski, United Mine Workers President Cecil Roberts, Writer-Activist Barbara Ehrenreich, and Joe Krebs, President of the Washington-Baltimore Local of the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. Alex graduated with Bachelors in Economics and Political Science from Boston University, and he has a law degree from George Mason University School of Law.
