Text Box: Susan von Struensee  currently works as a Hearing Representative at The Division of Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation (DEEOIC) Final Adjudication Branch (FAB) issuing final decisions on claims for benefits under the Energy Employees Occupational Illness Compensation Program Act of 2000. She has degrees in political science, health, and law, from U.C. Berkeley, Harvard University, and Suffolk University Law School and was also a Guberman Teaching Fellow in Legal Studies at Brandeis University and a Fulbright Scholar in Ukraine.
Susan came to the U.S. Department of Labor in 2008. Transitioning into a new position is a process that takes time, energy, and a certain level of commitment to learning the culture. As a new addition to the FAB, she knows all too well the benefits and challenges of transition. Taking on a new position generates feelings of excitement, but there can be some bumps along the way. Navigating within a new organizational structure, with its own unique procedures and protocols, is no easy task. Gaining an understanding of the role and responsibilities of a new position, while attempting to build professional yet personal working relationships with new colleagues and managers can be a struggle.
Susan realized she could benefit from the assistance of the union. The union helped her navigate the learning curve associated with her position and management. She was so impressed with their assistance and effectiveness that she became a union steward. Her goals are to support the union in its efforts to build effective relationships with managers and improve labor relations so that management and labor all will identify and incorporate best practices.
